First Breath National Conference: Innovative Made-in-Nagpur Devices Combat Neonatal Mortality

Blog

In the realm of neonatal care, every innovation holds the promise of saving precious lives. Such was the ethos driving the First Breath National Conference held on May 12, 2024, at the Center Point Hotel in Nagpur, where Nelson Hospital, in collaboration with Academy of Pediatrics Nagpur, National Neonatology Forum Nagpur and RD Gardi Medical College Ujjain, unveiled two groundbreaking prototypes of neonatal ventilatory devices. The event marked not only a technological leap but also a heartfelt dedication to combating neonatal mortality and ensuring a safer start for every newborn.

Unveiling Revolutionary Prototypes

The two prototypes launched at the conference, namely In-Life and NeoPap, embody the spirit of innovation and dedication that define the healthcare landscape in Nagpur. These devices, conceptualized and engineered locally, are poised to revolutionize neonatal resuscitation not just in India but across the globe.

In-Life: Redefining Safety and Affordability

The In-Life prototype represents a paradigm shift in pressure-controlled neonatal resuscitation. Utilizing fluid mechanics, this pressure-controlled T-piece resuscitator delivers precise inspiratory pressure without the need for frequent calibration. One of its standout features is the audible bubbling alarm, ensuring a tight mask seal and minimal leakage.

What sets In-Life apart is its remarkable affordability, approximately 100 times cheaper than conventional devices. This affordability, coupled with enhanced safety features, makes it a game-changer for developing countries where access to expensive medical equipment is often limited. Dr. Satish Deopujari, a key figure in this endeavor, emphasizes the importance of providing a safe and affordable solution for neonatal resuscitation, especially in resource-constrained settings.

NeoPap: A Comprehensive Respiratory Solution

Complementing In-Life is the NeoPap prototype, a compact, battery-operated device designed to deliver compressed air for various neonatal respiratory therapies. From neonatal resuscitation to nasal CPAP, bubble CPAP, and HFNC (High-Flow Nasal Cannula), NeoPap serves as a versatile, all-in-one solution. Its features include circuit compliance correction, pressure monitoring, pulmonary graphs, leak detection, and audible alarms for pressure and FiO2 levels.

NeoPap’s portability and multifunctionality make it a valuable asset in neonatal care units, offering clinicians a comprehensive toolkit to address diverse respiratory needs effectively. The device’s integration of advanced monitoring and alarm systems underscores its commitment to safety and quality care delivery.

Collaborative Innovation and Gratitude

The success of these prototypes is a testament to collaborative innovation, drawing on the expertise of healthcare professionals, technical teams, and academic institutions. Dr. Satish Deopujari acknowledges the unwavering support from key stakeholders, including the Nelson Hospital team, Indivital Devices for technical support, and invaluable inputs from Prof. Ramesh Singh of IIT Bombay.

The conference also highlighted the crucial role played by medical associations such as the Association of Pediatrics Nagpur and the Neonatal Forum of Nagpur Chapter. Under the leadership of Dr. Kush Jhunjhunwala, Dr. Yash Banait, Dr. Millind Mandlik, and Dr. Rajkumar Kiratkar, these associations have fostered an environment conducive to innovation and collaboration in neonatal care.

Embracing Feedback and Future Collaborations

Dr. Satish Deopujari and his team extend an open invitation for feedback, suggestions, and potential collaborations to further refine these devices. Their vision transcends commercial interests, aiming to ensure that every neonate receives the right start with optimal respiratory support. This commitment to continuous improvement underscores a holistic approach to neonatal care, prioritizing safety, affordability, and innovation.

Conclusion: A New Era in Neonatal Care

The conference at Center Point Hotel Nagpur marked the dawn of a new era in neonatal care, propelled by indigenous innovation and collaborative spirit. The In-Life and NeoPap prototypes stand as beacons of hope, promising a safer and healthier start for newborns worldwide. As these devices pave the way for future advancements, they serve as a reminder of the transformative power of innovation in healthcare, transcending boundaries and saving lives.
