Pulmonology

At Nelson Hospital, the department of pulmonology (Pulmonary Medicine, Chest Medicine, or Respiratory Medicine) deals with diseases related to the respiratory tract.

We provide consultative, diagnostic, and therapeutic services for patients with lung and breathing problems, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, and lung cancer, etc.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a chronic inflammatory lung disease that causes obstructed airflow from the lungs. Symptoms include breathing difficulty, coughing, mucus (sputum) production, and wheezing.

A condition in which a person’s airways become inflamed, narrow, swell, and produce extra mucus, which makes it difficult to breathe. Asthma can be minor or it can interfere with daily activities. In some cases, it may lead to a life-threatening attack.

They diagnose and treat behavioural and mental disorders caused by conditions affecting the nerve system , such as head injuries , epilepsy, dementia, or obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Bronchiectasis is a lung condition that causes coughing up mucus due to scarred tissue in the bronchi, or the passages that let air into the lungs.
A chest infection is an infection of the lungs or airways. The main types of chest infection are bronchitis and pneumonia. Most bronchitis cases are caused by viruses, whereas most pneumonia cases are due to bacteria. These infections are usually spread when an infected person coughs or sneezes.
